Episode 13: Inclusion is lucky
"We will all profit from a more diverse, inclusive society, understanding, accommodating, even celebrating our differences, while pulling together for the common good.”
–Ruth Bader Ginsburg
Is 13 a lucky or unlucky number? Bootie and Bossy discuss various lore about the number 13 and discover that the overriding message is "be inclusive!" You can definitely do that with Ina Garten's pork posole recipe, which is sure to feed a hungry and diverse crowd. As always, family stories are shared (Hi Mom!) and updates on our knitting projects.
Bootie Knits
Bootie's Zion hat for her son
Bootie finished the Zion hat from Knitting the National Parks by Nancy Bates. She used stash yarn (a nice way of saying mystery yarn). She did buy Westfield by Webs (Valley Yarn) in Persimmon and Denim. She added an inch and a half of ribbing at the bottom so the hat could be turned up.Bootie crocheted around the edge to add a pop of color to the brim. Here's a tutorial by Yarn2tog on how to do that.
Is this hat reversible??? OK, no, not really, but Bootie is very proud of her locked floats (and if anyone out there can figure out a way to do it with more than 2 colors, she would be eternally grateful!). Here's a video by Kyle Kunnecke who taught it to Bootie during a workshop. Kyle is the manager at Maker's Mercantile (one of Bootie's favorite yarn shops, and he is awesome!
Bossy Knits
Mom's Consolation Hedgehog--Blind, Naked and Afraid
The Hedgehog from Louise Crowther's Knitted Animal Friends, which we mentioned in Episode 12. "Holly the Hedgehog" will eventually have eyes, a nose and clothes, but look at those linebacker arms! That's what happens when you can't be bothered to get the right sized needles! What difference can one size up make? A lot! But Mom's okay, and that's all that matters. Bossy used Scheepjes Stone washed in Obsidian for the quills and Moonstone for the body, arms, and legs.
Look at all of those quills on Holly's back! This is why it took Bossy A LONG TIME to knit her up. Each of those quills is 8 stitches, which is why you should not count your stitches. Let that be a lesson. .
This is why we can't have nice things. The cashews that Bossy bought for a recipe but they were devoured before she could make the recipe. And now there aren't enough for the recipe. Should she buy another jar?
And whatever you do, don’t knit like my sister!
