Following our episode on Ina Garten, we watched the Netflix documentary on Martha Stewart. We tried Martha's Lemony white bean hummus and it was a hit, especially after imbibing Bossy's new favorite drink: the espresso martini

Some very special gifts we received : Bossy's friend Betsy gave her these brilliant tags to put on her handknits. She also gifted her the book 280 Japanese Lace Stitches (get to work, Bossy!). Bossy went to Webs and found some beautiful Noro yarn for Bootie (they don't have it anymore at Webs but the yarn is called Miyabi and here is the Ravelry page).

The cousins got together and created this lovely gingerbread monstrosity (note the heart tattoo and candy cane nose rings):

Bossy mentioned the issue of Life magazine from Episode 31 that we discussed. Bootie mentioned the remix video of Julia Child--it's so good!

Some words of wisdom from Martha's documentary: "if you want to be happy for a year, get married. If you want to be happy for a decade, get a dog. If you want to be happy for a lifetime, build a garden." Bossy quoted Joan Didion from the February 21/28 2000 issue of The New Yorker: "This is not a story about a woman who made the best of traditional skills. This is a story about a woman who did her own I.P.O. This is the “woman’s pluck” story, the dust-bowl story, the burying-your-child-on-the-trail story, the I-will-never-go-hungry-again story, the Mildred Pierce story, the story about how the sheer nerve of even professionally unskilled women can prevail, show the men; the story that has historically encouraged women in this country, even as it has threatened men. The dreams and the fears into which Martha Stewart taps are not of “feminine” domesticity but of female power, of the woman who sits down at the table with the men and, still in her apron, walks away with the chips." Bootie referenced the Cybil Shepherd documentary about Martha Stewart titled Martha Inc.: the Story of Martha Stewart.

Martha has two mottos: To learn something new every day. And when you're through changing, you're through.

Our crafting in pop culture moment: We loved the poncho (you know we love a good ponch!) that Martha wore when she came home from jail. The pattern is called Coming Home and it's available on Ravelry.

Another phoenix moment: the before and after of the shawl that Bootie knit. Here's the video tutorial that Bootie used. The pattern is the Bubble wand shawl by Marie Greene (it's not the pattern's fault, Bootie takes complete responsibility for choosing clown colors). Many thanks to Bootie's friend Lucy who gave her daughter the adorable necklace (it's sold as a charm at The Knitter's Studio and Lucy added the chain).

Look at Bossy go! She has made excellent progress on her Eurus sweater. This cable knit beauty is knit from side to side so she will only be stuck on sleeve island once! She's using Valley Yarns Northampton in the color 51 Sage Heather.

And whatever you do, don’t knit like my sister!

We have a game, thanks to our brilliant children who made it for us! Note that (for now) it is only playable on a desktop computer. Maybe you need a distraction for certain people so that you can get more knitting time? Or maybe you want to play a superfun knitting game? Either way, enjoy!!
